What is a seminal article and how do I find one?

- The article should be a peer reviewed journal article or book chapter (so not a govt report, .policy brief, NGO document). For more info on how to find one go to the link I’ve put up under the assessment (what is a seminal article…?).
- When choosing an article, think of all the courses you have done. What authors have you read/discussed, what topics kept coming up over the past 2 years? That can give you guidance on how to choose.
- For example, if I wanted a seminal article on Monopolies and production I’d go on Google Scholar and find that Dixit and Stiglitz’s famous paper has something like 10,000 citations. Citations is an excellent way to find “important’ work. So I’d write on that.
Dixit, Avinash K., and Joseph E. Stiglitz. “Monopolistic competition and optimum product diversity.” The American Economic Review 67.3 (1977): 297-308.
- Ideally you’d choose a theme from the Course (A Global Issue, so to speak). For example State crime, money laundering, human trafficking or any one of your choosing. This being a capstone course I thought I’d give you full freedom to explore your favourite subjects. Choose one that you like and this could also be the seed for your essay.
- You DO NOT have to stick to the Rubric structure. That is a guide for marking and informative for you of the elements we look for. How you present them is up to you.
- You only need to have the one article cited. You do not need further ones.
- more than anything we want to see your research and synthesis abilities in action.
- What is the topic or theory?
- What is the main argument?
- What is the method used?
