HCS206 – Clinical Biochemistry coursework
The coursework for this part of the module will comprise a laboratory report based on the measurement of
bilirubin and ALP
Title: Liver Function Testing
The total word limit is 1500, and each write-up will contain;
1. An introduction that details the background (liver function and LFTs) and aim of the practical (20%)
2. Method – very briefly describe the methods (10%)
a. I have given you the method for the ALP assay (on next page), include this in your report
(it will not count towards the word limit or marking scheme) and add the method for the
bilirubin assay
3. The results of the practical – this section will include labelled
a. Calibration graph for ALP (corrected absorbance against [pNP] in nmol/well ) with equation
of the trendline (using excel or other appropriate software) (10%)
b. Calibration graph for bilirubin (δA against [bilirubin] in µM) with equation of the trendline
(using excel or other graph plotting software). (10%)
c. Table showing absorbance values and concentrations of bilirubin and ALP in the patient
samples (indicating which results fall outside the reference range) (10%)
d. Results narrative describing the data (10%)
4. Discussion (20%)
a. This should include interpretation of the patient data – what are the potential conditions
causing these results? Fully explain your reasoning.
5. Conclusion – one or two sentences summarising the main findings of the work.
6. Format the report appropriately and cite all information sources and generate an appropriate
reference list (use Vancouver or Harvard style) (10%)
Submit your work via sunspace (turnitin) by midnight Friday 4th November 2016
Assessment Guidance: The coursework will assess the learning outcomes:
• Demonstrate the ability to accurately interpret analytical laboratory data
• Gain proficiency in the interpretation of data in laboratory practicals and by clinical case study
